RADHA CHILDREN'S HOME, INDIA 2007-2008

Host Organization: Rural Association for Development and Helpful Assitance

Educating and Providing for 15 Orphaned and Semi-orphaned Children

In Manali, India, by knitting 5 caps a day, Mrs. Sudershana could just manage to feed, clothe and educate the children, ages 2 to 13, who rely on her. Recent government cutbacks have made procuring enough food and educational resources difficult. With the help of End Poverty Now, the children at the RADHA Children's home will be able to continue their education and will be provided with healthy, nourishing meals.

This joint-venture, with End Poverty Now, ran from April 2007-May 30th 2008.

An End Poverty Now intern volunteered at RADHA (Rural Association for Development and Helpful Assistance) in the summer of 2007.

Working with children from various age groups and family backgrounds, our intern had the opportunity to meet children like Puja, age 3. In her words, Puja was brought to the home "badly undernourished, being barely the size of a one year old baby. Her bones are extremely fragile and underdeveloped, she can barely walk a few steps, while her tongue is so short she cannot talk. Apparently, when she first came, she had blood on her face from the scratches left by her younger siblings. Her parents are both alive, but they have both deserted their children."

Without help from caring NGOs like the RADHA Children's Home, there would be nowhere for children like Puja to grow and flourish. In cooperation with End Poverty Now, the children under Mrs. Sudershana's care will receive the financial support they need to develop into happy, healthy, successful adults.
